Just occasionally, at the cutting edge of scientific research, there is an “eureka” moment when something quite unexpected happens or when years of hard work result in discoveries that have a positive and fundamental effect on the future. Discovering and unravelling the secrets of DNA, the huge amount of medical research into cancer and genetically triggered diseases, the Large Hadron Collider starting up, sudden advances in plastics and chemicals, all have the skill and dedication of scientists driving the world forwards.

Now scientists based at the University of California in Santa Barbara have focussed their efforts on understanding why walking with a cup of coffee, (or any other drink I guess), very often results in spilling. Well surprise, surprise, there is a direct correlation between the speed of walking, the initial drink level in the cup and the likelihood of a mess. Now why it does it take top university research to state the obvious?  They have recorded people walking with hot drink in hand and varied the technique to include watching the contents while walking and also looking straight ahead! It appears there is a relationship between the movement of fluids in the typical diameter coffee cup and the motion from the average person’s walk. The results of this ground breaking work recommends, wait for it……………… less cup contents giving a greater distance between the fluid level and the lip of the cup, and walking slower!
